Feasibility study of commercial Rhododendron foliage collection in the Beddgelert area |
|
This study visited three Rhododendron foliage collection sites in Scotland and Ireland to examine the type of sites, mode of operation and profile of successful foliage enterprises. Based on the site conditions discovered in this review an estimate was made of the practicality of commercial Rhododendron foliage collection from Nant Gwynant. It was determined that commercial collection was feasible but that it would require access to a larger area of Rhododendron infestation as Nant Gwynant alone would not be able to support an economic enterprise.

This innovative project looked at the sustainable use and management of Rhododendron ponticum, an alien plant species which is posing a threat to native biodiversity particularly in the the Beddgelert area in the Snowdonia National Park. The plant is currently controlled by cutting it down and burning, prior to a herbicide treatment.
